Sciatica FAQs

Sciatica is a common problem that causes pain along the sciatic nerve at the back of the legs, often accompanied by mobility impairment. Chiropractic care is a safe and effective method for eliminating sciatic pain and numbness. At Back & Neck Care Center of North County, we treat sciatica and other health issues. Here are some frequently asked questions our patients have about sciatica:

.

What Are the Symptoms of Sciatic Nerve Compression?

Sciatica can vary in the severity of its symptoms. Some people may simply experience tingling or numbness down their legs after sitting for a prolonged period or standing in one place. Bending, twisting, or even just coughing can cause pain. Other people may have impaired movement due to nerve compression. Sciatica can also cause serious effects, such as loss of bladder or bowel control.

What Causes Sciatica?

Aging can lead to the deterioration of the spinal discs, which can cause sciatica. Obesity is another factor, as the additional weight puts pressure on the spinal structures, which can compress the sciatic nerve. If you have a job that involves twisting or lifting movements or prolonged sitting at your desk, it can contribute to sciatic nerve compression. Additionally, the high blood sugar levels associated with uncontrolled diabetes can cause damage to the sciatic nerve, resulting in discomfort.

How Is Sciatica Diagnosed?

During your consultation with the chiropractor, you will be asked a number of questions about your current condition, injuries, lifestyle, and other related health matters. You will be asked about your level of pain and exactly where the pain is located, along with other symptoms you might be experiencing. An X-ray may be used to detect disc problems or narrowing of the spinal canal that may contribute to sciatica pain.

What Kind of Sciatica Treatment Do Chiropractors Offer?

A chiropractor will use a variety of techniques to relieve sciatica, such as cold and heat therapy, spinal adjustments, electrical nerve therapy, ultrasound, or spinal decompression to address disc problems.
